Air filters : replace every 12-24k miles, depending upon driving conditions (even more frequently if you live in a dusty environment). All filters (Mahle or Mann) are made in Germany. Wipe out the filter housing with a damp rag before installing the new filter element. Never use a shop vacuum here as the intake of gas fumes combined with the spark of the electric motor could cause the vac canister to explode.

Microfilters : these should be replaced every 30k miles. There are many FAQ's on the web detailing the procedure for the different BMW models. All paper filter elements are "original BMW" with 3 times the density of many of the aftermarket units. For the later E38/E39 cars, we recommend the charcoal Hepafilter replacements over the paper filters because of their ability to remove smoke and odors.

Fuel filters : replace every 12k miles (carb cars, CIS models, early injected models) or 18-24k miles for all contemporary models with the larger filter canisters. For models with filters in the engine compartment, disconnect the battery before replacing the filter to avoid risk of fire. On 530i/540i cars mfg in 93-94, check to see if you have a single or dual filter setup (the factory ETK is ambiguous on the cutover dates). Replace hose clamps with the smooth band ABA stainless steel clamps (available separately).

Oil Filters : replace every 3-4k miles. Most filters are Mahle brand. All of the contemporary cartridge elements include the hardware to properly do the job, ie, the required o-rings and crush washers.

Spin on filters should be tightened by hand with a light coating of oil on the rubber seal ring. The housing bolt for cars with cartridge filters should be torqued to 30nm (22-23 ft lbs). Oil drain plugs (ISO M12, 17mm wrench size) are tightened to 33nm (24 ft lbs). Oil drain pans and tools to make the job easier are detailed at the bottom of the page.
