Oxygen sensors are typically changed every 50,000 miles (30,000 miles for single wire sensors). Erratic idle, driveability issues (such as engine surging, hesitation or excessive fuel consumption), or fault code indicators (with a "check engine" light on the dash) are signs that the sensor may be bad. The sensor can be removed and visually inspected and proper function can be confirmed with voltage readings from your multimeter.
A properly functioning sensor is very important for the longevity of your catalytic converter. Many late model BMW's (primarily 8 & 12 cyl cars) have 2 oxygen sensors, one before and one after the catalytic converter. Most OBD2 cars from 96-on have 4 sensors, 2 after the converter and 2 in the manifold. Any significant temperature variances between the two will trigger a check engine light on the dash. If you are replacing the catalytic converter in your car, I'd recommend a new sensor(s) at this time.
Replacing the oxygen sensor can be difficult at times, either because of limited access or seizure from high exhaust temperatures. If you've got a stuck sensor, spray it with generous amounts of penetrating oil (Wurth Rost Off or PB Blaster catalyst-see bottom of page). Removal should be with a 22mm 6-pt deep socket (an open end wrench may cause you to round the corners). We sell a specialty Facom socket which is a deep 22mm socket with a slit down the side for the O2 sensor wire. If you don't want to invest in this tool, you can cut the sensor wire (you're now committed to removing the sensor) and use a regular 22mm (6pt please) deep socket. Use more penetrating oil and give it time to work if it doesn't want to come out the first time. Remember to put anti-seize compound on the threads (eg, Lubro Moly 2012) when you install the new sensor....all of the new sensors we sell will already have anti-seize on the threads. Torque the new sensor to 55nm (40 ft lbs).....you will have to use the specialty socket if you want to do this properly as cutting the wire is no longer an option.
If you opt for one of the Bosch universal oxygen sensors below, it is strongly advisable that you solder the connections and use heat shrink tubing over the joints. This will minimize the chance of the connection vibrating loose.
