One's concept of an ultimate garage is guided by their specific needs and hobbies. From a nicely appointed multi-purpose space for vehicle parking and maintenance to an impeccably detailed automotive museum with a dedicated wash-bay, service area, machine shop and parts room. The only limits are one's imagination and budget.

An ultimate garage can be attached to the existing home or built as a stand-alone structure. It can extend beyond the actual space dedicated to the storage and maintenance of vehicles.....out to the motorcourt and gardens, to the patio and pool. The end result must be architecturally and mechanically sound, flexible enough to accommodate the owners' growing and changing needs.

The best garages and workshops require detailed planning before any contractors arrive at the jobsite. It's best to have a general set of plans from a local architect familiar with the construction code and ordinances in your area. An architect is also better suited to ensure that the exterior design and footprint of the garage is consistent and compatible with the style of your home.

As a Technologist and Consultant, my role is to work through the details with you and your contractors. These include..........

  • Architectural Plan Review - with recommended changes (if any) - This is to ensure that the size, construction and utilities will accommodate the clients "working" and "storage" requirements. Its much easier and far cheaper to make these changes while in the planning phase. (Note - ALL recommended changes are subject to approval by the client's architect, engineer and the local building department.)

  • Air Conditioning & dehumidification systems - temperature and humidity control is very important for protecting your tools and vehicles and providing a comfortable working environment.

  • Audio & Video Distribution

  • Building acoustics - air compressors, air tools, shop vacs, audio systems, etc...they all make noise in a very "live" garage/workshop environment. Ultimate Garage can provide the information and products to (1) curtail the transmission of sound from the workshop to the outside world, and (2) absorb reflective sound in the workshop. I can also provide more elaborate solutions to noise control for shop owners with engine or chassis dynamometers.

  • Cabinetry/Storage & Workbenches

  • Compressor & air supply

  • Electrical - power distribution & backup - Choosing the right panels, switches & receptacles, timers, generators and installation hardware can be very important. Even stable, efficient 3-phase power is now a feasible option for the serious home workshop.

  • Floor Drains

  • Floor treatments (tile, epoxy,etc)

  • Fume extraction systems - whether you've got a dedicated dyno cell or just doing some welding, painting or running a vehicle in the shop, a fume extraction system can go a long way towards preserving the health of your occupants and the safety of your shop. Done incorrectly, the system's performance can range from ineffective to explosive!

  • Heating options

  • Lighting - linear, task & accent

  • Tools & Equipment

The process starts with a set of architectural plans or a site visit for renovation work. Effective May 1, 2007, a $1,000 retainer fee will be charged at the start of a project with the first 8hrs of services deducted (@ $125.00 per hour) from the retainer. Travel time ($75/hr) and expenses will also be deducted as incurred. Any remaining credit can be applied to purchases through Ultimate Garage.

Ultimate Garage will provide support for the duration of the project. A site visit is recommended (but not required) before the floors are poured and the walls are sheetrocked so that I can do a thorough walk-through with the client to assess the interior space. The placement of the utilities and mechanicals will be determined at this time along with the location of the workbenches & cabinetry, lighting and shop equipment. Special flooring and framing requirements will be indicated at this time.

This is an important phase in the project as it will affect the character, flow and efficiency of the final garage and work areas.

In addition to the knowledge and experience I can bring to your project, I also offer clients preferred pricing on many garage and workshop products. The additional "savings" on these items can be significant and easily cover the cost of the retainer.

For local clients, installation services are also available for all of the products I sell. Please call (201-262-0412) or email ( steve@ultimategarage.com ) for details.
